Safety Vests For Visibility And Identification

By Ina Hunt

The main requirement in industries, organizations and families is that individuals be kept safe from harm. Utilizing safety vests is an effective method of doing just that. Employees and individuals will stay injury-free if they are highly visible to traffic or heavy machinery operators. Reflective tape will assist in helping them to be seen even in the dark of night. Buying these precautionary garments will keep insurance premiums down and personnel on the job when needed.

The specifications and standards of these garments were put into effect in June of 1999 by the International Safety Equipment Association. Their rules laid out the requirements for the wearing of this article for different levels of employment and various scenarios.

Having these articles on hand will make employees much more visible to other individuals, traffic and heavy-duty machinery. The reflecting bands will help give even more visibility during the brightest times of the day and in the evening and at night when visibility is extremely limited. These garments will also help identify individuals as being part of a distinct group. For example, PTA members who guide traffic before a meeting may wear these garments to specify that they are in charge of parking and traffic flow. A police crossing guard may use one to make him more visible to oncoming vehicles and also mark him as someone in authority.

Individuals who would appreciate having these at their disposal include airline employees, mechanics, school patrols, road workers, construction employees, security guards, warehouse staff, crowd control workers, and traffic management personnel. Many individuals also keep a vest or two in the trunk of their cars for personal reasons. They are great to have on hand if they are in a situation where they must change a flat tire on a freeway or even help direct traffic in the case of an accident.

The most common colors used are yellow and orange. Blue and red can also be obtained for high visibility. The addition of reflective tape adds to the overall visibility of the garment. They are usually of very lightweight, flame-resistant material so they do not become hot and burdensome to the wearer. Logos and inscriptions can be added for identification purposes during use which is especially helpful if there is more than one company or business that is using the exact same style in the immediate area.

Other styles with the same protective qualities can be found. The most common of these is the tee shirt style which allows high visibility when the individuals wearing them turn to the side. Bands of this same protective fabric can be added to wheeled equipment, strollers and other items which require high visibility.

These protective articles can be purchased at hardware, uniform and building supply stores. They can also be found online at various industrial equipment sites. Choose the fit and style that best suits the usage and the person who is wearing it. Always keep extras on hand in case more employees are added to the project or the work is more dangerous for others than first perceived.

Just the awareness of your employees or family members wearing this protective garments will give everyone peace of mind and reassurance that they will be seen by traffic and machinery. This visibility will also help them be identified as part of a group with the authority and tools to do a specific task or assignment.
