They also work as teaching tools for toddlers and kindergartners as seen on television with Big Bird and Cookie Monster.

Parents can use them to help their children be aware of what police and fire personnel do and how they can help the child when in need or if lost. They can also be dressed as doctors and help reduce the fear when your child goes in for shots or checkups. The dolls are made in many different occupational styles and may also be helpful when your child tries to decide what to be when he or she grows up.

Religious organizations also use them for teaching youngsters. Reenactments of stories from biblical times are powerful experiences for students. They seem to remember the lessons and ask questions that are pertinent when the lesson is presented as a play. Many producers of marionettes sell sets of biblical characters to aid in the programs.

An entertainer will use the dummy as though it is a live person on the stage with them. The ventriloquist will manipulate the eyes and mouth as though the dummy is speaking in response to questions asked. They can manipulate the arms with what is called an arm rod with their other hand to give the body the look of being animated also. Years are spent by entertainers trying to create a performance that is acceptable to the audience and themselves.

A puppet can serve as entertainment or as a teaching tool for families across America. They are also used a decorative pieces and some of the antique ones are very valuable. The clothing they wear can be changed and many people have several costumes for them to wear.
