Fashion Design & 3 Pointers For Art Graduates In Retail

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

To say that fashion design holds promise would be putting it lightly. Those who go to school, in order to pursue this major, will find that there are quite a few opportunities to take hold of. Some of these involve business, which is where retail may come into discussion. If you believe that this is the field for you but may not be entirely sold on said field, here are 3 of the greatest pointers that can help you to make the most out of your possible retail career.

One of the first steps of succeeding in retail, with a fashion design degree, is to listen to everything that customers have to say. You should gain a general understanding of what every guest was, in relation to clothing, and see about pointing them to different options. Of course, fashion is a subjective point of conversation, as everyone will possess different tastes and look better in different attires. As you can imagine, then, a greater level of care is needed.

It's also important to measure just how much a particular guest will require your assistance. For instance, you may approach someone who entered your store with the question, "Is there anything I can help you with today?" A common response might be, "I'm just looking, but thank you." Such a response is pretty cut-and-dry. However, if you are asked about a certain product or what you would suggest, that's when you know your knowledge will come into effect.

You should also know that, despite your efforts, you will not be able to follow through with every sale. Keep in mind that consumers have their own goals, which can change before you even know it. Even if you fail to sell a guest on a particular fashion item, you shouldn't dwell on it. Instead, try to reflect and see if there was anything you could have done better. This way, you can approach future guests with a greater degree of knowledge intact.

Those who have the ambition to succeed, in any field they decide to get into, will one day find the success they crave. I believe that the same can be said for retail managers and workers, both of which possess degrees in fashion design. There's quite a bit of success to be seen here, as well as room for movement up the corporate ladder. It's just a matter of how much work you're willing to put in, so make sure that you always put your best foot forward.
