Theater is a place where various forms of fine arts are performed to the audience live through various methods. It can also be spelt as theatre. The events in theater can be true or imaginary and are normally presented live to the audience. Communication to the audience is achieved through various means such as use of speech, dance, music, songs, plays, and gestures among others. To understand the concept of theater Phoenix is a good place to visit.

Various elements of the experience such as immediacy, presence, and physicality in a theatre are enhanced through use of stagecraft and design elements. The term theatre can also be defined as a collection of various forms of arts presented to an audience through various methods. The word has its origin from the Greek language. Infact, most of the elements such as classification of arts into genres and technical terminology used in the modern theaters are derived from the ancient Greek drama.

Production of an art involves experts from various fields. Among them are directors, actors, playwrights, and technical production crews. The crew comprises of fight directors, stage composers, production managers, dramaturg, and stage, sound, lighting, set, and video designers. The final work is a collective effort of all the experts.

Stagecraft is a term used to refer to all video, film, and theatrical aspects involved in the production process. It covers such aspects as makeup, stage management, hanging and focusing of lights, construction and rigging of scenery, sound mixing and recording, and procurement of props. Design and procurement of costumes also falls under stagecraft. Normally stagecraft is handled by a single professional although in modern days, this is changing fast.

Several kinds of art are encompassed in theater including theatrical music, comedy, tragedy, and drama. Drama presents specific modes of fiction as a performance. Dance and music are usually combined with drama. Both songs and spoken dialogues may be comprised in the musicals. Theatrical music and theatre have a close relationship making music a part of theatre since long ago.

Modern music theatre communicates to audiences by combining different elements like dances, spoken dialogues, and music. Theatre came up during the early twentieth century. Genres like vaudeville, variety, comic opera, and music hall were the roots of its emergence. In comedies, people are told stories through humor. Sometimes theatres may deliberately express taboo, bleak, or controversial subjects through humor in what is called black comedy.

Theatres are owned by companies and at times individuals. Most companies produce, perform, run, and then retire a piece of work before starting another other. Other companies however, rehearse several shows at once. A piece of work is played severally upon request by audiences before being retired. Such companies are referred to as repertory companies.

Unions exist in the theatre industry too. Directors, actors, managers, and other experts in the industry have their own unions they are required to join. Membership to a union is a requirement in some theaters before joining.
