Scandinavian Prog Rock Over The Years

By Christa Jarvis

Over the years of rock music, one sub genre has been known to have gained a lot of fans due to its complex style. This style is known as progressive rock and was actually created in the United Kingdom and then spread to other regions. Scandinavia especially loved this sub genre and adapted it into what is now known as the style called Scandinavian prog rock.

Now for those who do not know, progressive music is the type of music that uses all kinds of beats and music sounds that are not in ordinary music. Now this type of music is usually known for its sudden shifts in tempo as well as sudden shifts in beat and rhythm. Songs in these genres are known to give listeners variety so that the listeners can enjoy different shifts in the rhythm and beats.

Of course as stated above, Scandinavia readily accepted this type of trend and adopted it. Now if one is wondering what is Scandinavia, basically, it is an area that is made out of three main countries namely Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Of course there are also secondary countries too like Holland, Greenland, and Finland.

Now one of the first bands that came out for this music scene was a band known as Steppeulvene from Denmark. After the emergence of this band, many more other bands like Ache, Blue Sun, and of course the very famous Alrune Rod. What makes these bands really authentic is that they would make songs in their own native language and played songs inspired by their folk music.

Now one of the biggest names in this field would of course be Burnin Red Ivanhoe which was formed also in the very late sixties. Their unique sound fused so many genres together in order for them to produce something new. They also made use of a lot of different instruments like organs as well as violins, harmonicas, and trumpets.

Now the Swedish also had their own bands that they could be proud of. Now one thing to take note of is that prog rock did not become that popular among the Swedish unlike around the Dutch. This type of music only became extremely popular in the nineties when many artists and bands emerged from the underground.

Of course bands from Holland are also known for the music that they produce. Now what makes their style unique is that they would often try to fuse the rock sound with the sound that comes from folk music. It is for this reason that melodic tunes and songs with a little bit of tempo shifts and beat changes became the main ingredients for songs of these bands.

So basically, those are some information about this kind of scene that stemmed up in Scandinavia. Although this trend originally started in the UK, people from the other parts of the Scandinavian region enjoyed listening to it. It is because of this that they were able to create their own brand of songs and made them very appealing to the ears of the public.
