Browse Online For Handmade Hats For Newborns

By Kerri Stout

Shopping for babies is fun, because you'll see such cute teeny-tiny clothes and accessories. You may be fortunate enough to have a specialty baby boutique in your town or a well-stocked department store. However, you also have a much wider choice at your fingertips if you just go online. Handmade hats for newborns are one of the most fun of all, since there are so many darling models in the pictures and many cute designs.

Perhaps you have the skills to knit or crochet a cap or bonnet. The internet is still great for ideas; one of the tiny models might have just the style that you're looking for. If you're not experienced enough to copy something you see free-hand, you'll find many patterns for new-baby accessories. The selection is so large that you may have trouble deciding which creation you want to make.

It's fun to virtual window shop, especially if you're planning on taking pictures for a baby album or a birth announcement. Seeing the designs that are available will give you great ideas on how to best present the new arrival to friends and family. There are even sets for twins and designs for kids who've grown a bit while you're getting your photographic gear together.

In fact, animals are one of the favorite themes. Bunnies are popular, as are bears, monkeys, lions, cats, and puppies. Babies look so cute with ears or even dinosaur spikes. You can add a diaper cover and have both head and tail. Knitted and crocheted caps have embroidered details; you can even have 'whiskers on kittens'.

Part of the fun is seeing the tiny models, many of whom look too young to have their eyes open. It they aren't sporting a pair of ears, they may be wearing a sailor's cap, a fireman's helmet, or a hard hat just like Daddy wears to his construction job. For the girls, there are flowers and lace and even bejeweled turbans fit for an exotic palace.

As gifts, these little bonnets are useful as well as fun. Not all are practical, though; some are merely whimsical and are more for photo ops than for wearing on an outing. There are stocking caps with long tops - maybe longer than the baby - and tassels on the end. There are lacy caps for christenings and sparkly ones to celebrate a new princess or prince.

Church groups and knitting/crocheting clubs may want to choose a charity that outfits babies for needy parents and keep it supplied with pink, white, and blue caps. Older siblings will enjoy seeing some of the fun animal designs on their new brother or sister. People without the support of close family appreciate knowing that someone cared enough to hand-make a present for them and their new arrival.

The online boutiques or patterns for needlework make it easy to get ready for the birth of a child. This is a happy time, and the right hat can light up the celebration.
