How To Choose Cremation Urns

By Tanisha Berg

Cremation urn plays a major role in the cremation process especially that of human beings because the cremains need to be stored afterwards. The cremains need to be carried in a vessel to the final resting or disposal place. The carrying and storage are done in cremation urns which are made specifically for that purpose. With many companies venturing into this business, one needs to have some information before setting out to make a purchase.

Picking an urn is not a walk in the park, it is an activity affected by many factors. These factors include size, color, material, design, seller, customizations, resting place, and cost. Cremains vary in size hence the choice of size should be done wisely. Smaller animals generate less ash when cremated compared to large ones.

170 to 350 cubic inches is the size of standard urns while 400 to 500 inches cubed is the one for the large models. There are small urns that can accommodate as little as a teaspoonful of ash while big ones can hold the remains of two grown-ups. For every pound of un-cremated flesh, a cubic inch of volume should be bought.

Urns are very rich in color. Buyers have a variety of colors they can pick from. It is considered respectful and good send off to pick the color that was most liked by the dead. Interior theme should influence the color if the item is to be placed inside the house.

A major role is played by the material the urn is made from. The choice of material needs to be made before starting the search. Materials are classified broadly into biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials. Most common materials include bronze, plastic, cardboard, marble, ceramic, cloth, glass, and wood. If one is a fun of conserving the surroundings, biodegradable materials are the way to go. The material can be chosen to match interior theme in a house. Information about the dead can be engraved on materials that that allow engraving.

Another choice one is required to make is the design. This choice is relatively difficult to make because the market is filled with hundreds of designs yet others continue being introduced daily. Shape and all artistic works on the item are covered under the design. The vessels come in different shapes sometimes resembling items like balls, devices, or fruits. This allows the buyer to pick the shape that was favorite to the deceased. Photos and other personal stuff are placed near the vessel.

The resting place is the final place where the vessel will be placed to stay forever after the funeral and memorial services. The location can be indoor or outdoor. It now becomes obvious that materials used to build urns for indoor purposes cannot be similar to those for outdoor. Some people decide to bury them underground while other bury them in water.

Some of the factors mentioned above play a key role in influencing the cost. Some of the factors are material, size, and design. The price may also depend on the manufacturer because some companies price their products higher than others.
