The Beautiful Tunes Of Kosmoratik Band

By Anita Ortega

Layering has been a part of art for years where the same word or image is used with more than one meaning. This technique is effective in communicating and packaging the message for different consumers. It inspired Kosmoratik to begin an experiment on layering in music. The group brought together Gunner Odd, Lise Lotte and Eivind Johansen to form a band based in Oslo back in 2011.

The first album was released in 2012 under the title gravitation. It captures a combination of symphonic pop and classic rock to result in an epic and sincere melody. It has a heavy inclusion of acoustic guitar, oboe and string quartet. These sounds are expertly combined to produce a musical delicacy that borders classical symphony. Such careful combination has resulted in an endearing melody that has won fans for the band across the world.

Their most anticipated second album was released under the title Bridges and Boats. It is a continuation of the same style but more inventive and fresh. It borrows heavily from the pop style of the 60s and 70s and achieves their aim of communicating or identifying with the feelings of listeners. Pop music in the 60s and 70s was composed by thoughtful writers who took time to know what listeners wanted. The rock was psychedelic beyond showing a lot of intent and depth during composition.

The themes explored by music from this band are complex. They are able to communicate a different message on the surface and behind the words on their lyrics. The borrowing from symphonic pop and incorporation of the element of pop makes their music to stand out. It is not the traditional pop but an inventive rock with classical affiliation.

Eivind Johansen has been with the group since formation and played a crucial role in its success. He is an excellent arranger who expertly combines the wind and string instrument sounds into superb melodies. This gives the music a unique and wide range that continues to win them a larger following with every track. The resulting ballads have an excellent pop feel.

On the keyboard is Gunner Odd who is also excellent on the guitar. He is a multi-talented instrumentalist. He works with Eivind on the arrangements to produce music with a cross-generational appeal, a classical rock and symphonic pop feel. Lise Lotte is able to sway between alternate rock and classical jazz, thanks to her natural and wide vocal range. She achieves these results in a seamless way and her voice continues to get better over time.

The success of the first album has created excitement with their fan base growing from one performance to the other. This has seen them perform on different world stages in sold out concerts. Their major influences are Nick Drake and John Martyn as individual performers. They seek to emulate the success of Beatles with their magical pop.

Poetry is a unique part of their lyrical formulation. It is informed by poets who produced timeless classics and reigned supreme during their era. They included Hafez and Rumi. Their music is available online for live streaming and purchase. What makes this music to stand out is the ability to communicate easily by blending words and different sounds into a classical symphonic pop.
