Creating Short Plays For The Classroom

By Tammie Caldwell

As a teacher, it is your job to make sure that your students would be able to learn wholistically. Keep in mind that if you would limit them to what can be found in their textbooks, then they would never be prepared for real life. If that would happen, then you would never feel fulfilled with your profession.

First of all, you will have to make a decision on which materials will bring fun to your classes. If you are teaching a novel, then you already have your answer for your short plays for the classroom. You can stick with the plot so that you will be able to give out some points that are important to the learning of your students.

Second, if what you have in your hands is a long story, then take the initiative to cut it up wisely. Be reminded that you are not forming actors in here. Yes, they may realize their potential through you but then, your main goal in here is to energize them so that they will work hard in getting those high scores.

Third, you will have to serve as the light of these kids at the end of their tunnel. Take note that they are not born actors. They may even lack the facial expressions in depicting their roles but then, your only role in here is to bring them out of their comfort zone. Make them see that their life will be so much easier if they are confident.

You must be lenient with the practice period. Be reminded that you have grouped students with different personalities. If you will not offer them the time to adjust one to one another, then they will never get to see the same terms. So, promote teamwork to the best of your abilities for these kids to be grateful to you later on.

You have to provide them with the freedom to modify their lines. Remember that you are trying to bring out the creativity of these people. If you would not let them improvise when they are encountering a memory block, then you would not be enhancing their skills in that aspect.

You must make your students know the lesson behind the stories that they will be playing. If you will not put them in that mode, then they will think that they can get through this like it is just a game. You really have to put your foot down in here.

You have to be fair in judging the skills of your students. Keep in mind that not all of them are born with a high level of confidence. It is your job to make them realize that they have nothing to fear about and that they would be able to pull this off if they truly want to.

Overall, you should practice patience in here. Your students may not get everything in the first round but then, you will have to provide them with chances. If not, then you are not an educator at all.
