The Making Of Kahlua

By Daniel Johnson

Kahlua a coffee flavored liqueur actually has a Mexican run base. This liqueur takes a while to make as the sugarcane and the coffee beans uses to make it are handpicked during the harvest season which runs from October to March.

Many desserts, like cakes, ice cream, and baked delicacies use Kahlua as a topping. It is also widely used in many mixed drinks and cocktails around the world. Some popular Drinks with Kahlua include the Mudslide, White Russian, Black Russian, and B52. There are many others and reference guides on the internet can offer a host of additional suggestions. This is a good way to serve something new or unique at your next cocktail party. Kahlua mixed drinks can be equally refreshing.

The sugarcane stalks are ground in order to obtain the juice which is boiled until it becomes a molasses. Then water and yeast are added to the molasses in order for it to ferment. The fermentation is what creates the alcohol. Then the mixture goes through a distillation process until the sugar is converted into alcohol. The alcohol which comes from the sugarcane is kept in barrels.

After seven years both the sugarcane and the coffee is taken to the distillery where the coffee gets turned into an extract. The extract is mixed with the sugarcane mixture, caramel and vanilla is added. Then it is left for two months before it is bottled and filtered. All of this is done before you can go to the liquor store and buy the liqueur to make those great tasting drinks.

Once the Kahlua is ready to use there are several ways to use it. You can add it as a topping for a desert, add it cakes or creme brulees to give it that special taste. There are also drinks that use Kahlua as one of the main ingredients. Kahlua drinks include the Mudslide, the Black Russian and the White Russian. And it gives a cup of coffee a great taste when a little bit is added to it.

Kahlua mixed drinks usually include cream, milk and cocoa. In Mexico you can buy Kahlua flavored chocolate. You can even get a shot glass to drink your Kahlua out of. Since Kahlua is made out of coffee beans it does contain caffeine. It contains approximately ten mg of caffeine per 100 ml. This is about a quarter of what is in regular coffee. So when you have drinks with Kahlua you have caffeine in them.

If the regular Kahlua is not to your taste you can also buy it with peppermint mocha, hazelnut, mocha, French vanilla and Especial. Each one has its own particular flavor along with the amount of calories. None of Kahlua's calories come from fat but the alcohol in it does lower your fat metabolism, so even a small amount of the liqueur that you consume converts directly into fat.

Kahlua is not known for its fat burning properties, as alcohol slows the process. But, it can be a lower calorie alternative to a thick milk shake on a warm evening, especially if the flavored versions are served on ice.
