Choice Of Giclee Prints For Sale

By Karyn Shields

New ways of printing are available today that have brought about immense changes. The art world is one area that has been affected by the ability to make copies of original artworks that are hard to distinguish from the originals. Finding giclee prints for sale is not difficult today with many of them being sold from online stores. These copies retain the hues and tones of the originals and are sold for far less. This means that the works of important artists are far more widely available than ever before.

The type of printer used for this process is much like an ordinary desktop inkjet printer but far bigger and, of course, much more costly. The original image is scanned and at this stage it may be scaled down or up in size. The image is then printed out onto matt photo paper, watercolor paper, canvas or other suitable substrates.

Fade-resistant inks are used so that the colors remain vivid for many years. The artist will often choose the same substrate as used for the original to produce an effect as close to it as possible. When using watercolor paper, the effect is very close to the original as the inks saturate the paper so well. Canvas is often used too and it is stronger and more crease resistant than paper.

Digital art of all kinds is growing in popularity, whether it consists of reproduction of originals, images conceived on computer and printed or both combined. This has introduced a whole new element into the art world and buyers can become confused with all the various options on offer. What they need to understand is that copies of originals must be labelled as copies.

Digital copies must be classified as such. Limited edition prints offer artists a way to make their art more widely available. Copies are available at a more reasonable cost and are priced higher if they are limited edition. This option allows more collectors to buy their work.

There are a number of methods used by artists to make such copies more valuable to the buyer. They will sign them, number them and even add a certain number of brushstrokes to each copy. The more they personalize the copies, the more collectors are willing to pay.

Any dishonesty with regard to the number of copies produced can seriously affect the reputation of a seller. A buyer does not want to spend money on a personalized, limited edition print and then find many more in circulation than stated. The confidence of the buyer in the artist will be destroyed as a result of this.

Buying a print does not mean that one is settling for inferior quality. It may not be the original but many copies are hardly distinguishable so one can still admire their beauty on the wall. The colors of the print are usually very vivid and artists are often very involved in the whole process to ensure that the quality is as good as possible. Artists may even possess their own equipment so they have total control over final quality of a print.
