Boca Raton Beach Holiday Guide

By Jony Mozen

The thing that draws tourists to this particular patch of the Sunshine State's east coast is the two-mile stretch of pristine beach sand. Boca Raton is Florida's Malibu for lavish spenders, combining upscale shopping with stylish homes offering expansive oceanfront views. The dunes stretch endlessly in both directions, with nothing ahead except the horizon, the sea birds and the shimmering waters of the Atlantic.

The locals call it Boca, and it's ideally located just 40 miles from Miami. Both airports on either side at Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale are just 20 minutes away. It's the closest getaway from the big cities on Florida's east coast. People come here to enjoy the peace, soak in the sun and snooze on the beach sand with no crowds or buildings to block the view.

It is an ideal place for a day trip to the beaches or for a family vacation. The city's reputation as a safe and clean place to work and live makes it very appealing for families with kids. Not to mention that the city beaches are protected by lifeguards every single day of the year. It's needed because both locals and visitors flock to the beaches throughout the year to enjoy the clear skies and brilliant sunshine.

The best part is that three city parks open out on to the beaches. This allows people to combine a day trip to the beach with a family picnic for the kids, complete with playgrounds, restrooms, grills and picnic tables. Red Reef Park with its man-made reef a bare ten feet from shore is an ideal place to let kids frolic in the water and learn how to swim and explore a whole new world below the water's surface.

Red Reef and its 39 acres have much more to offer apart from the mile-long beach and inviting waters. The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center offers everything from a butterfly garden to an aquarium with sharks which gets a lot of interested visitors during the live feeding times. They also have a whole menagerie of native species such as manatees and brown pelicans.

Surfers will find a designated surfing area at the southern ends of Red Reef and South Beach Park. For all-out recreation and sports, check out South Inlet Park Beach managed by the county. Visitors can fish from the pier and enjoy a variety of waterfront activities including jet skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, sailboarding, beach volleyball and more.

If that's not enough, hop over to the Delray Municipal Beach. It's ideal for a fun-filled day of beachfront recreation and games. Visitors here can surf, swim, snorkel, sail and go windsurfing. There are separate areas for everything from kite flying to paddleball and Frisbees.

If golf is a religion, then the oceanfront golf course in Boca is what heaven would be like for believers. Patrons of the arts can spend countless hours at the Museum of Art, and nature lovers will never want to leave the Daggerwing Nature Center. The Sugar Sand Park community center attracts families and little kids who come for the carousel, children's museum and the science emporium.
